Leviticus 15:19

And if a woman have an issue, and her issue in her flesh be blood, she shall be put apart seven days: and whosoever toucheth her shall be unclean until the even.

Leviticus 15:19 (KJV)

Leviticus 15 gives rules about bodily discharges and ritual purity for Israel. This verse speaks of a woman with a flow of blood, commonly understood as her regular monthly period. The word “issue” means a flow or discharge, and “in her flesh” is a gentle way of referring to her body. These laws helped the Israelites stay holy and distinct from other nations.

The woman was to be put apart for seven days. This separation was not a punishment for sin. It was a ceremonial state that kept the community pure. Anyone who touched her became unclean until evening. This uncleanness was temporary and ritual, not moral. It affected a person’s ability to join worship until the day ended.

The seven days show a complete cycle, and uncleanness until evening shows a short, passing condition. These rules taught the people to respect boundaries and to see the difference between clean and unclean, holy and common.

Jesus Christ fulfilled the law and brought a new covenant. Hebrews 9:13-14 explains that His blood cleanses our conscience from dead works. The old rituals pointed to the need for a mediator and the final sacrifice of Christ. They also showed God’s care for physical rest and health, as separation allowed time to recover.

Christians are not bound by these ceremonial laws. Yet we learn lasting principles. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, so we honor God with them. We also respect the boundaries of others and consider how our actions affect the faith community. Purity, both physical and spiritual, remains important.

This verse reminds us that God is holy and calls His people to be set apart. It also shows His compassion in giving clear, practical rules. As we read, we can thank God for the cleansing we have through Christ and ask Him to help us live with reverence and care for others.
