Leviticus 18:14

Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father’s brother, thou shalt not approach to his wife: she is thine aunt.

Leviticus 18:14 (KJV)

Leviticus 18 gathers God’s laws for Israel on sexual purity. These commands set the people apart as holy and protected the family. The verse forbids a man from sexual relations with his father’s brother, his paternal uncle, and with his uncle’s wife, his aunt. The phrase “uncover the nakedness” is a Hebrew way of speaking about sexual relations. This law is part of a larger list of prohibitions given through Moses to establish standards of sexual morality within the community.

The first part of the verse forbids any sexual involvement with the father’s brother. The second part makes clear that approaching the uncle’s wife is also forbidden, because she is the man’s aunt. This law guards the closeness of family ties and honors the marriage bond. It leaves no room for exceptions. The underlying principle is to preserve the sanctity of the family structure and maintain appropriate boundaries within close relationships.

Similar commands appear in Leviticus 18:12-13, which forbid relations with a father’s sister and a mother’s sister. Leviticus 20:20 states that those who break this law will bear their iniquity. These passages together show that God treats sexual sin within the family with great seriousness. The command reflects God’s design for sexual purity and the importance of honoring family relationships.

God’s laws are not arbitrary. They are given for the well-being of individuals and the whole community. This command reminds believers to respect God’s boundaries in every relationship, especially within the family. Sexual morality is not merely a social custom but a divine command that calls for holiness. The prohibition is clear and absolute, leaving no room for exceptions. This teaching emphasizes the need for believers to respect God’s boundaries in all relationships, especially within the family. The verse calls for a life of holiness, set apart from the practices of the surrounding nations.

The New Testament continues to affirm the sanctity of marriage and the call to sexual purity. Jesus summarized the law as loving God and loving one’s neighbor (Matthew 22:37-40). Honoring family boundaries is one way to love both. This verse challenges readers to examine their own relationships and to live in a way that honors God with their bodies. It reminds us that sexual morality is not merely a social convention but a divine command. Therefore, this verse has enduring relevance for Christian living, calling us to honor God with our bodies and to maintain purity in all our relationships.
