Leviticus 20:19
And thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy mother’s sister, nor of thy father’s sister: for he uncovereth his near kin: they shall bear their iniquity.
Leviticus 20:19 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the Holiness Code, where God calls Israel to reflect His holy character. It forbids sexual relations with an aunt, whether the mother’s sister or the father’s sister. The phrase “uncover the nakedness” is a respectful Hebrew way of speaking about sexual intimacy. The law protects the family from confusion and harm.
Meaning
The verse calls the aunt “near kin,” showing that such a relationship crosses a clear boundary. Both the man and the woman involved “shall bear their iniquity,” meaning both are guilty and will face God’s judgment. This is not a private matter; it affects the whole family and the community. The same principle appears in Leviticus 18:12-13, which forbids these same relationships. The law applies equally to men and women, and it treats the uncle’s wife as an aunt as well.
Biblical connections
This command reflects God’s design for family relationships. Sexual sin breaks trust and damages the bonds that hold families together. The seriousness of the warning shows that God cares about the holiness of His people in every area of life, including the most private ones.
Application
Christians today are not under the civil and ceremonial laws of Israel, but the moral principle remains. God still calls His people to honor family boundaries and to live with sexual purity. This verse reminds believers to examine their own relationships and to respect the lines God has set. It also teaches that sin has consequences, and that obedience brings blessing.
Reflection
God’s laws are not arbitrary; they protect what is precious. The command to avoid incest shows His care for the family as the foundation of society. It also points to the need for holiness in every generation. As believers, we can thank God for His wise boundaries and ask Him to help us live in a way that honors Him and protects others.
