Leviticus 22:31

Therefore shall ye keep my commandments, and do them: I am the Lord.

Leviticus 22:31 (KJV)

Leviticus records the laws God gave to Israel through Moses. Chapter 22 gives specific rules for the priests and for offerings brought to the tabernacle. This verse closes that chapter with a general call to obey all of God’s commandments. The word “therefore” links this command to the detailed instructions that came before it. Those laws were not random or optional; they were part of God’s covenant with Israel. The call to obedience was for the whole community, not only for the priests.

The phrase “keep my commandments, and do them” means both remembering and actively practicing what God has said. Keeping involves careful attention, while doing involves putting God’s words into action. The declaration “I am the LORD” grounds obedience in God’s own identity. He is Yahweh, the covenant God who has a rightful claim on His people. This is not merely a statement of existence but a claim of covenant sovereignty. Because God is holy and has set Israel apart, obedience is the proper response to His revelation and His established relationship with them.

The commandments include the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20, which form the core of God’s moral law. But they also include all the regulations about worship, moral conduct, social justice, and personal holiness found throughout Leviticus. Jesus later summarized the law into two great principles: loving God with all our heart, soul, and mind, and loving our neighbour as ourselves (Matthew 22:37-39). He also said that those who love Him will keep His commandments (John 14:15). This shows that obedience remains central to a relationship with God.

Although many specific Levitical rules were for Israel under the old covenant, the principle of obedience remains for Christians today. We are called to obey God’s commandments as revealed in the whole Bible, following the teachings of Jesus. Our obedience is not a way to earn salvation; it is a response to God’s grace and a sign that we belong to Him. When we obey, we show reverence for His authority and love for Him. This call applies to every believer, not just to religious leaders.

This verse reminds us that God’s commands are not burdensome but are given for our good. They reflect His holy character and His desire for a people set apart for Him. As believers, we honour God by keeping His commandments, not only in outward actions but also in the attitude of our hearts. Obedience is an expression of our love for God and our commitment to walk in His ways. Let us ask God to help us both remember and do what He has said.
