Leviticus 26:35

As long as it lieth desolate it shall rest; because it did not rest in your sabbaths, when ye dwelt upon it.

Leviticus 26:35 (KJV)

Leviticus 26 presents the covenant blessings and curses that God promised to Israel based on their obedience or disobedience. This verse belongs to the section describing the consequences of disobedience, specifically the failure to observe the Sabbath rest for the land.

God had commanded that every seventh year the land was to rest and lie fallow (Leviticus 25:1-7). The Israelites neglected this command, tilling and manuring the land on the seventh years as on other years, and they did this many times while they dwelt in the land. As a result, God declares that the land itself would enjoy its sabbaths: during the time it lies desolate, it shall rest. This rest is described as a compensation or repayment for the sabbaths it did not receive. The verse is closely connected to Leviticus 26:34, which states that the land will enjoy its sabbaths while it lies desolate and the people are in their enemies’ land. The desolation of the land and the exile of the people are the means by which the land receives the rest that was denied to it.

This verse also anticipates Leviticus 26:43, which reiterates that the land will enjoy its sabbaths while it lies desolate without them, and connects this to the people’s rejection of God’s laws. The concept of rest is significant throughout Scripture, but here it is specifically the land’s Sabbath rest as a covenantal requirement, not primarily personal Sabbath observance.

While the verse directly addresses the Israelites and their specific situation, we can draw spiritual principles from it:

  • Importance of rest: God commanded the Israelites to observe a Sabbath rest not only for themselves but also for the land. This principle reminds us of the importance of taking regular rest in our lives, physically, mentally, and spiritually. Rest allows us to recharge, refocus, and experience God’s refreshing presence.

  • Consequences of disobedience: The verse highlights the consequences of disobedience to God’s commandments. When the Israelites neglected to observe the Sabbath rest for the land, it resulted in desolation and judgment. Similarly, our disobedience to God’s instructions can lead to negative consequences in our lives. It serves as a reminder to prioritise obedience to God’s Word.

  • God’s faithfulness and discipline: Despite the judgment and exile, God’s discipline also demonstrates His faithfulness. Just as a loving parent disciplines their child for their betterment, God’s discipline is intended to bring His people back to Him and restore their relationship. Even in times of discipline, God’s love and faithfulness remain steadfast.

Leviticus 26:35 serves as a reminder of the importance of obedience to God’s commands, the significance of rest, the consequences of disobedience, and God’s faithfulness even in times of discipline. Historically, this verse is often understood to refer to the Babylonian exile, during which the land of Israel remained desolate and at rest while the Israelites were taken captive. This period was a consequence of their disobedience and failure to observe the Sabbath rest for the land over many years.
