And he powred of the anointing oile vpon Aarons head, and anointed him, to sanctifie him. Leviticus 8:12 (KJV)

Leviticus, the third book of the Bible, is primarily concerned with the laws and regulations that the Israelites observed as they established the tabernacle and the priesthood. Chapter 8 records the consecration of Aaron and his sons as priests. In this verse the anointing oil is poured upon Aaron’s head. The oil was a blend of myrrh, cinnamon, calamus, cassia, and olive oil, carefully prepared according to God’s instructions (Exodus 30:22‑33). It symbolised the presence and power of the Holy Spirit and was used to set apart priests, prophets, and kings for their respective roles.

The anointing of Aaron was a pivotal moment in the establishment of the priesthood. The pouring of the oil on his head signified his consecration and setting apart for the office of high priest. Through this act Aaron was designated as the chosen representative of the people before God, responsible for offering sacrifices and interceding on their behalf. The visible, symbolic act marked Aaron as God’s chosen servant.

The purpose of the anointing was to sanctify Aaron—to set him apart for holy service. Sanctification means being separated from ordinary use and dedicated to a sacred purpose. By anointing him with oil, Aaron was consecrated and made holy for his role as high priest. This act emphasizes the importance of holiness in the priestly office and set a precedent for future generations of priests.

While the Old Testament priesthood and its rituals are no longer practiced today, the principles endure. Christians are called to be a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9), and Aaron’s anointing can symbolize our own anointing as believers in Christ. Through faith in Jesus we receive the Holy Spirit, who empowers and equips us for service in God’s kingdom (Acts 1:8). We are sanctified and set apart to live lives that honour God, reflecting His holiness and love to the world.

In conclusion, Leviticus 8:12 describes the anointing of Aaron, the high priest, with sacred oil, symbolising his consecration and sanctification for the priestly role. As Christians we can draw lessons from this verse regarding our anointing by the Holy Spirit and our call to live a life dedicated to God’s service.
