Listen to this article

And he brought Aarons sonnes, and Moses put of the blood vpon the tippe of their right eare, and vpon the thumbs of their right hands, and vpon the great toes of their right feete: and Moses sprinkled the blood vpon the Altar round about. Leviticus 8:24 (KJV)

Context: Leviticus is a book of the Old Testament that primarily deals with laws, rituals, and instructions given to the Israelites by God through Moses. Leviticus 8 describes the consecration of Aaron and his sons as priests in the Tabernacle, the place of worship established by God.

The Significance of Blood: In the Old Testament, blood had great symbolic value. It represented life and atonement for sins. The sprinkling of blood served as a cleansing and dedication ritual. The blood was seen as a means of purification and setting apart the priests for their holy service to God.

Application of Blood: In Leviticus 8:24, Moses applied the blood of a sacrificial animal to various parts of Aaron’s sons’ bodies. According to traditional interpretation, the right ear is understood to symbolize attentive listening and obedience to God’s commands. The right hand is viewed as representing works and actions, signifying dedication to serving God. The great toes of the right foot are taken to symbolize the walk and journey in the service of God. By applying blood to these parts, it signified the complete consecration of the priests’ entire being to God.

Symbolic Meaning: Right ear: Traditional interpretation holds that the priests were to listen to God’s instructions and follow them carefully, emphasizing the importance of attentively hearing God’s Word and being obedient to it. Thumbs of right hands: The hands were an instrument of work and service. By anointing the thumbs, tradition symbolizes consecrating their actions, dedicating their skills and efforts to God’s service. Great toes of right feet: The feet represented their walk and journey. By applying blood to the toes, tradition signifies the priests’ commitment to walking in God’s ways and dedicating their entire lives to His service.

Spiritual Application: Obedience: We are reminded of the importance of attentive listening and obedience to God’s Word. As believers, we should strive to hear and understand God’s instructions and live in obedience to His commands. Dedication: The anointing of the thumbs and great toes represents consecrating our actions and our journey to God. It reminds us to offer our skills, talents, and lives as a service to Him. Wholehearted commitment: The application of blood on various body parts signifies the complete dedication of our entire being to God. We are called to surrender every aspect of our lives to Him, including our ears, hands, and feet.

In conclusion, Leviticus 8:24 illustrates the consecration of Aaron’s sons as priests through the symbolic application of blood. It emphasizes the importance of attentive listening, obedience, dedication, and wholehearted commitment to God in our lives as His people.
