Leviticus 8:34

As he hath done this day, so the Lord hath commanded to do, to make an atonement for you.

Leviticus 8:34 (KJV)

Leviticus records the laws God gave to Israel, especially those about worship, priestly duties, and holiness. Chapter 8 describes the consecration of Aaron and his sons as priests. Moses anointed them with oil, offered sacrifices, and sprinkled blood to ordain them for their service. The ceremony lasted seven days, and the command was to repeat the same rituals each day until the period was complete.

Verse 34 declares that what was done that day was exactly as the LORD commanded, and that atonement was made for the people. This shows that the consecration was not a human invention but a divine instruction. The phrase “to make an atonement for you” means the priests’ consecration benefited the whole congregation, not just the priests themselves. The word “atonement” refers to covering and cleansing sin, so that God’s wrath is turned away and reconciliation with God is possible.

The sacrificial system in Leviticus belonged to the Old Covenant, which finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ. In the New Testament, Jesus is presented as the ultimate sacrifice for sin, replacing the need for animal sacrifices. The annual Day of Atonement in Leviticus 16 was a permanent statute for making atonement for all Israel’s sins once a year, showing the ongoing need for atonement under the old covenant. Christ, as the great High Priest and perfect sacrifice, accomplished the complete and final atonement.

Christians can draw spiritual significance from this verse by recognizing the importance of obedience to God’s commands. Just as Moses, Aaron, and his sons obeyed God’s instructions to make atonement for the people, believers are called to follow God’s Word and the teachings of Jesus Christ, who is the fulfillment of the Law. True obedience brings reconciliation with God, and the ultimate atonement has been accomplished in Christ.

The obedience of Moses and Aaron serves as a model for faithful adherence to God’s commands. The atonement made in the consecration points forward to the complete atonement accomplished by Christ. This verse reminds believers that approaching a holy God requires atonement, and that God has provided it through His Son.
