Leviticus 8:9

And he put the mitre upon his head; also upon the mitre, even upon his forefront, did he put the golden plate, the holy crown; as the Lord commanded Moses.

Leviticus 8:9 (KJV)

Leviticus 8 records the consecration of Aaron and his sons as priests. God gave Moses detailed instructions for this ceremony, and Moses carried them out exactly. This verse describes one specific action: Moses placed the mitre, or turban, on Aaron’s head, and then put the golden plate, called the holy crown, on the front of the mitre. The phrase “as the LORD commanded Moses” shows that every detail mattered in worship.

The golden plate was made of pure gold and fastened to the mitre with a blue lace, reaching from ear to ear across Aaron’s forehead (Exodus 28:36-37). It was engraved with the words “Holiness to the LORD.” This visible sign reminded Aaron and the people that the high priest must be holy when he represented them before God. The mitre itself was made of fine linen, a simple but dignified head covering. Together, the mitre and the golden plate set apart the high priest for his sacred duty.

The high priest served as a mediator between God and Israel. His garments, especially the holy crown, pointed to a greater priest who was to come. Jesus Christ is our eternal High Priest. Through His sacrifice, He entered the heavenly sanctuary once for all and secured our redemption (Hebrews 9:11-12). Unlike Aaron, who needed to offer sacrifices repeatedly, Jesus offered Himself once and now intercedes for us (Hebrews 4:14-16). The golden plate on Aaron’s forehead foreshadows Christ’s perfect holiness and His role as our mediator.

Although we do not follow these ceremonial laws today, the principle of holiness remains. Believers are called to be a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9) and to offer ourselves as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God (Romans 12:1). The inscription “Holiness to the LORD” challenges us to dedicate every part of our lives to God, not just outward actions but also our thoughts and motives.

  • Holiness and devotion: Just as the high priest’s mitre and golden plate showed his dedication, we should pursue a life of consecration. This means obeying God’s Word, seeking His will, and allowing His Spirit to transform us.

  • Mediation through Christ: We do not need an earthly priest to approach God. Because of Jesus, we can come boldly to His throne of grace. The holy crown reminds us that Christ is our mediator and that He continually intercedes for us.

Leviticus 8:9 teaches us that God values obedience and holiness. Moses did exactly what God commanded, and the high priest wore the holy crown as a constant reminder of his calling. For us, the lesson is clear: God calls us to be holy in every area of life. We can rejoice that Jesus, our perfect High Priest, has made this possible. Through Him, we can draw near to God with confidence, knowing that He welcomes us because of Christ’s finished work.
