Luke 10:20

Posted on 18 May at 14:41
Listen to this article

“Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.”

Context:In Luke 10, Jesus had sent out seventy disciples in pairs ahead of Him to preach the kingdom of God and heal the sick. They returned with joy, reporting their success in casting out demons and performing miracles. In verse 20, Jesus responds to their excitement but redirects their focus.

Rejoicing in Spiritual Authority:Jesus acknowledges the disciples’ authority over evil spirits and their power to do miraculous works in His name. However, He cautions them not to place their primary source of joy in these abilities. While spiritual authority and the ability to minister effectively are important, Jesus wants to emphasise an even greater reason for rejoicing.

Rejoicing in Salvation:Jesus encourages the disciples to find their true cause for rejoicing in the fact that their names are written in heaven. This statement points to the assurance of their salvation and their eternal destiny with God. The names of those who belong to God are recorded in the heavenly realm, signifying their inclusion in the family of God.

Importance of Salvation:Jesus shifts the focus from external accomplishments to internal transformation. He reminds the disciples that their greatest reason for rejoicing should be their relationship with God and the eternal life they have received through faith in Him. Salvation is the foundation of our joy as believers because it secures our reconciliation with God and our eternal future.

Perspective on Spiritual Gifts:Jesus’ words in this verse highlight the importance of maintaining the right perspective regarding spiritual gifts and ministry. While it is significant to operate in the power of the Holy Spirit and witness His work through us, our primary joy should always be rooted in our relationship with God and the gift of salvation.

Application:This verse reminds us to evaluate our priorities as followers of Christ. We may experience various spiritual gifts, abilities, or successes in our Christian walk, but these should not be the primary source of our joy. Instead, our joy should be grounded in the reality of our salvation and our intimate relationship with God.

  • Rejoicing in Heaven:our names are written in heaven.
