Listen to this article

“In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.”

Context:Luke 10:21 is part of a larger passage where Jesus sends out the seventy disciples to preach and heal in various towns. Upon their return, they joyfully report their success to Jesus. In response, Jesus expresses His gratitude to the Father.

Rejoicing in Spirit:“In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit.” This phrase reveals Jesus’ deep and genuine joy at the work accomplished by His disciples. It highlights His divine nature and His delight in the Kingdom’s advancement.

Gratitude to the Father:“I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth.” Jesus acknowledges God the Father as the source of His authority and power. He humbly expresses His gratitude for the Father’s role in the disciples’ accomplishments.

Hidden from the Wise, Revealed to Babes:“Thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.” Jesus recognizes that the mysteries of the Kingdom, the truths about salvation, and the message of the Gospel are often hidden from those considered wise and prudent in their own understanding. Instead, God reveals them to those who approach with childlike faith and humility, often referred to as “babes” or the humble and teachable.

God’s Sovereign Plan:“Even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.” Jesus affirms the Father’s sovereignty in the revelation of His truth. He acknowledges that God, in His wisdom, chooses whom to reveal His truths to, according to His divine plan and purposes.

Key Lessons from Luke 10:21:

  • Humility and Childlike Faith:Jesus encourages us to approach God with humility and childlike faith, recognizing that the mysteries of the Kingdom are revealed to those who are receptive and teachable.
  • Divine Revelation:The understanding of God’s truth is not solely based on human wisdom or intellectual prowess. It is a gift from God that He chooses to bestow on those who seek Him with sincerity and trust.
  • God’s Sovereignty:Jesus reminds us of God’s absolute sovereignty over His revelation. He has the ultimate authority to reveal or conceal His truths as He deems fit.
  • Joy in Kingdom Advancement:Jesus’ rejoicing demonstrates His delight in the work of His disciples and the advancement of God’s Kingdom. It encourages us to find joy in participating in God’s redemptive work.

Overall, Luke 10:21 highlights the importance of humility, the joy found in God’s Kingdom work, and the recognition that God reveals His truths according to His sovereign will.
