Nehemiah Chapter 12

Summery

Nehemiah 12 continues the account of the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem and the dedication of the newly constructed wall. The chapter begins by listing the priests and Levites who returned from exile and took part in the dedication ceremony. They were divided into two choirs, one led by Ezra and the other led by Nehemiah. The dedication involved joyful singing, thanksgiving, and musical instruments.

The priests and Levites purified themselves and the people, and then they ascended the wall, walking in opposite directions until they met at the Temple. There, they offered sacrifices and celebrated with great rejoicing. The occasion was marked by the appointment of leaders and the organization of regular contributions for the support of the priests and Levites.

The chapter concludes by mentioning the appointments of Nehemiah as the governor of Judah and Hanani as the governor of the citadel in Jerusalem. Nehemiah worked diligently to ensure the welfare of the city and its inhabitants, keeping a watchful eye on the surrounding nations.
