Nehemiah 12:20

Of Sallai, Kallai: of Amok, Eber: Nehemiah 12:20 (KJV)

The book of Nehemiah is set in the post‑exilic period under Persian rule. Nehemiah, a cupbearer to the Persian king, was troubled by reports that the walls of Jerusalem lay in ruins. Through God’s guidance and provision he returned to Jerusalem to oversee the rebuilding of the walls, and the chapter records the dedication of the rebuilt wall and the re‑establishment of various priestly roles and responsibilities.

Nehemiah 12:20 is part of a list of priests and Levites who were serving in Jerusalem at the time of the wall’s dedication. The names mentioned represent individuals who participated in the religious life and worship of the community.

Genealogies in Scripture serve several purposes. They establish historical connections, preserve family lineage, and emphasize the continuity of God’s plan. By recording each name, the text highlights the significance of every individual’s contribution to the community and its worship.

Sallai and Kallai are mentioned only in this verse, and little else is known about them. Their inclusion among the Levites indicates that they likely performed temple‑related duties or other responsibilities connected with the worship services.

Amok and Eber are similarly obscure. Eber is known elsewhere as a descendant of Shem and an ancestor of the Hebrew people; the name “Amok” does not correspond to any other well‑known biblical figure. Their presence together in the same Levitical list suggests they held comparable responsibilities in the worship community.

The lesson of Nehemiah 12:20 is that even names that receive only a brief mention remind us of the importance of every person’s role in God’s community. Their faithful service, though not extensively documented, fulfilled vital purposes in the restoration of Jerusalem.

Application for today: believers should recognize that our service to God matters, regardless of how visible it may be. Faithfully fulfilling the roles God has assigned to us contributes to spiritual growth and the restoration of our own communities, just as Nehemiah and these priests contributed to the rebuilding of Jerusalem’s walls.
