Nehemiah 12:19

Posted on 18 May at 15:21

“And of Joiarib, Mattenai; of Jedaiah, Uzzi;”

Context:The book of Nehemiah recounts the story of the Jewish people rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem after returning from exile in Babylon. Nehemiah served as the governor of Judah and played a pivotal role in leading the community in this endeavor. Chapter 12 lists the priests and Levites who participated in the dedication of the rebuilt wall of Jerusalem.

Historical Background:Nehemiah 12:19 mentions Joiarib, Mattenai, Jedaiah, and Uzzi as individuals associated with the priestly line. In the Old Testament, priests and Levites held important roles in the religious life of Israel. They were responsible for the worship at the temple, offering sacrifices, and leading the people in their spiritual practices.

Joiarib:Joiarib was the name of a priestly family descended from Aaron, the brother of Moses. They were part of the priestly division known as the sons of Joiarib (1 Chronicles 24:7-19). The name Joiarib means “Yahweh contends” or “Yahweh pleads.”

Mattenai:Mattenai is mentioned in Nehemiah 12:19 as a descendant of Joiarib. Not much is known about him individually, as he is not mentioned elsewhere in the Bible. However, his inclusion among the priests participating in the dedication ceremony signifies his involvement in the religious service.

Jedaiah:Jedaiah, another individual listed in Nehemiah 12:19, was a common name among the priests. One notable figure with the same name was the high priest during the time of Ezra and Nehemiah (Nehemiah 12:10). Jedaiah means “Yahweh knows” or “known by Yahweh.”

Uzzi:Uzzi, mentioned alongside Jedaiah, is also a relatively common name among the priests. Uzzi is described as the son of Bukki, from the lineage of Aaron (1 Chronicles 6:5-6, 50). The name Uzzi means “my strength” or “my might.”

  • Recognition of Service:The mention of these individuals highlights the significance of the priests and Levites in the religious life of Israel. It reminds us of the importance of recognising and appreciating the service of individuals who play a role in worship and ministry within the community of believers.
  • Faithful Stewardship:The priests and Levites faithfully fulfilled their duties and responsibilities despite the challenging circumstances of the Israelites’ return from exile. Their commitment to their roles serves as a reminder to us to be faithful stewards in the service of God, even in difficult times.
  • Community Participation:The dedication of the rebuilt walls of Jerusalem involved various individuals from different priestly families. This collaborative effort emphasises the importance of unity and community participation in accomplishing significant tasks. It reminds us of the power of working together for a common purpose.
