Luke 11:17

Posted on 18 May at 14:40

“But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth.”

Context:Luke 11 records an account of Jesus teaching His disciples about prayer and addressing the Pharisees who accused Him of casting out demons by the power of Beelzebub, the ruler of demons. In response, Jesus presents a logical argument about the consequences of a divided kingdom and a divided house.

Understanding the Verse:

  • “But he, knowing their thoughts”:Jesus, being fully aware of the Pharisees’ thoughts and intentions, responds to their accusation.
  • “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation”:Jesus uses a common understanding of the time to emphasize the self-destructive nature of division. When a kingdom is internally divided and in conflict, it becomes vulnerable and eventually falls into ruin.
  • “A house divided against a house falleth”:Jesus extends the principle of division to households. If a family or a house is divided against itself, it is destined to collapse.
  • Spiritual Lessons:

    • Unity and harmony:Jesus highlights the importance of unity within a community, whether it is a kingdom or a household. Division and conflict lead to destruction, whereas unity fosters strength, stability, and prosperity.
    • Spiritual warfare:Jesus’ reference to a kingdom divided against itself carries a deeper spiritual implication. It highlights the destructive nature of internal conflicts within God’s kingdom, such as disunity among believers or factions within the Church. The body of Christ must strive for unity, love, and mutual support.
  • Satan’s tactics:The context of Jesus’ statement addresses the Pharisees’ accusation that He cast out demons by the power of the devil. Jesus refutes their claim, explaining that Satan would not work against his own kingdom. This demonstrates that Satan’s ultimate aim is to cause division and chaos. Christians should be aware of his tactics and strive to resist division and promote unity.
  • Application:

    • Seek unity:As believers, we should strive for unity within the Church and in our relationships. This means promoting love, forgiveness, and understanding, while avoiding gossip, bitterness, and division.
    • Guard against division:Recognize that division can weaken the effectiveness of the Church and hinder its ability to fulfill its mission. Be vigilant against divisive attitudes, conflicts, and factions, and seek to resolve differences in a spirit of love and reconciliation.
    • Pray for unity:Pray for the unity of the body of Christ, both locally and globally. Ask God to help us overcome divisions and promote love, harmony, and cooperation among believers.
