Luke 11:18
If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub.
Luke 11:18 (KJV)
Context
Jesus had just cast a demon out of a man, and some in the crowd accused Him of doing so by the power of Beelzebub, the prince of demons. In response, Jesus points out the absurdity of that charge: if Satan were fighting against himself, his kingdom could not endure. The accusation implied that Satan was divided, which would be self-defeating.
Meaning
Jesus uses the word “Satan” in His reply, equating Beelzebub with Satan. The logic is simple: no kingdom can survive if it is divided against itself. If Jesus were casting out demons by Satan’s power, then Satan would be working against his own interests, causing his kingdom to collapse. Therefore, the charge is unreasonable.
Biblical connections
This argument echoes the proverbial sayings in the previous verse about a divided kingdom and a divided house. The Greek text uses the phrase “if Satan also be divided against himself,” showing that Jesus treats the accusation as a hypothetical that leads to an impossible conclusion. The same reasoning appears in the parallel accounts of Matthew 12:26 and Mark 3:26, where Jesus makes the identical point in response to the same charge.
Application
This verse calls us to discernment. We must not attribute the work of God to evil forces. It also reminds us that Satan’s kingdom is real but not invincible. Jesus’ ministry of casting out demons was a direct assault on the kingdom of darkness, demonstrating His authority over it. As believers, we can stand firm in the confidence that Christ has ultimate power over all spiritual opposition.
Reflection
Jesus’ question exposes the foolishness of the accusation and reveals the consistency of His own mission. If Satan’s kingdom is divided, it cannot stand; but Jesus’ power over demons shows that the kingdom of God is breaking in. We are invited to recognize the source of true spiritual authority and to align ourselves with Christ, who alone can overcome the forces of evil.
