Luke 12:33

Context:To understand the verse better, it’s important to consider its context. In the preceding verses, Jesus is teaching His disciples about the dangers of greed and materialism. He tells them not to worry about their lives and to seek God’s kingdom above all else. In verse 33, Jesus provides a specific instruction on how to combat greed and store up treasures in heaven.

Sell and Give Alms:Jesus begins by saying, “Sell that ye have, and give alms.” This instruction emphasizes the importance of generosity and selflessness. It encourages believers to be willing to let go of their possessions for the sake of helping others in need. Giving alms, which refers to acts of charitable giving, reflects a heart that is focused on God and His kingdom rather than earthly wealth.

Bags that Wax Not Old:Jesus continues, “Provide yourselves bags which wax not old.” This phrase alludes to storing up treasures in heaven. Unlike earthly possessions that decay and can be lost or stolen, the treasures stored in heaven are eternal and secure. The “bags” symbolize the spiritual investments we make through acts of charity and selflessness, which have lasting value and reward in the eternal realm.

A Treasure in the Heavens:Jesus emphasizes the significance of storing up treasures in heaven. Earthly treasures are temporary and subject to loss, but heavenly treasures are incorruptible and enduring. Our generosity and acts of love towards others have an eternal impact, storing up treasures that cannot be taken away.

Protection from Thieves and Moths:Jesus concludes the verse by highlighting the security of heavenly treasures. He states that in heaven, no thief can approach and no moth can corrupt these treasures. Earthly possessions are vulnerable to theft, decay, and destruction. However, treasures stored in heaven are safe and cannot be compromised by external forces.
