Luke 17:21

Posted on 18 May at 14:05

Neither shall they say, Loe here, or loe there: for behold, the kingdome of God is within you. Luke 17:21 (KJV)

Let us delve into a Bible study on Luke 17:21 from the King James Version. This verse is part of a larger passage where Jesus is teaching about the coming of the kingdom of God and occurs in a conversation between Jesus and the Pharisees, who asked Him when the kingdom would come. In response, Jesus instructs them about the nature of the kingdom and its arrival.

Context and Background:

Luke 17:21 is situated within that dialogue with the Pharisees. Their question about the timing of the kingdom prompts Jesus to explain that the kingdom is not a visible, earthly realm to be pointed out with signs, but a spiritual reality that is already present among those who receive Him.

Interpretation:

  • (a) Kingdom of God – The “kingdom of God” refers to the rule and reign of God in the hearts of people and the establishment of His divine authority in the world. It is not a physical, earthly kingdom but a spiritual reality.
  • (b) “Within you” – The phrase can be understood in two ways. (i) Internal Presence: the kingdom dwells in the hearts of believers when they accept Jesus as Savior and submit to His lordship, allowing the Holy Spirit to reside within them. (ii) Spiritual Perception: the kingdom is spiritually discerned, becoming evident when one acknowledges Jesus as the Messiah and surrenders to His authority.
  • (c) Rejection of False Messiahs – The verse warns against being misled by those who claim the kingdom can be found in a particular location or through a specific person. Jesus cautions against looking for external signs and urges believers to recognize the kingdom’s presence among them.

Application:

  • (a) Internal Transformation – Luke 17:21 reminds believers that the kingdom begins with personal, internal transformation, emphasizing the importance of allowing God to reign in our hearts, submitting to His will, and living according to His principles.
  • (b) Spiritual Discernment – The verse encourages believers to seek spiritual discernment rather than being swayed by outward appearances or misleading claims, developing a deep relationship with Jesus and allowing the Holy Spirit to reveal the kingdom.
  • (c) Unity in the Kingdom – As Jesus taught that the kingdom is within believers, He highlights the communal aspect of the kingdom. Believers collectively form the body of Christ and share responsibility to advance the kingdom by living out their faith and demonstrating God’s love to the world.

Additional Considerations:

It is essential to examine the verse in its broader scriptural context and consider related passages to gain a comprehensive understanding. Luke 17:21 should not be isolated but interpreted in light of the entirety of Scripture and the teachings of Jesus.
