They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.

Context

Jesus spoke these words while teaching His disciples about the coming of the kingdom of God. He used the days of Noah as an example to illustrate the need for readiness and watchfulness.

Meaning

The verse describes people eating, drinking, marrying, and being given in marriage until the day Noah entered the ark. These are normal, legitimate activities, not sinful in themselves. The problem was that the people of Noah’s day were so absorbed in daily life that they ignored the warning of coming judgment. The Greek verbs indicate continuous action, showing that these routines went on right up to the moment the flood came and destroyed them all.

Biblical connections

This event is recorded in Genesis 6-9, where Noah, a righteous man, was warned by God and built the ark to save his family and the animals. The flood came as divine judgment upon human wickedness. Jesus uses this historical event as an analogy for the suddenness and finality of future judgment.

Application

Believers today are called to live with an eternal perspective, not becoming complacent or engrossed in worldly concerns. Just as the flood came unexpectedly, so will the day of Christ’s return.
