Luke 17:5
“And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.”
Context:In this passage, Jesus is teaching His disciples about the importance of forgiveness and the necessity of faith. Earlier in Luke 17, Jesus speaks about the consequences of causing others to stumble and emphasizes the need for forgiveness. After Jesus explains the significance of forgiveness, the apostles respond with a request for increased faith.
Key Points:
- The Request for Increased Faith:
The apostles approach Jesus and make a simple yet profound request: “Increase our faith.” Their desire is to grow in faith, recognizing that faith is essential for following Jesus and fulfilling the ministry to which they were called.
The Significance of Faith:Faith plays a crucial role in the life of a believer. It is through faith that we are justified and saved by God’s grace (Ephesians 2:8-9). Faith allows us to have a personal relationship with God, trust in His promises, and experience His power and guidance in our lives. It is by faith that we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit and are able to live a life pleasing to God (Galatians 3:14).
The Measure of Faith:Jesus responds to the apostles’ request by telling them that if they have faith as small as a mustard seed, they can accomplish great things. The mustard seed was one of the smallest seeds known at that time, but it grows into a large tree. Jesus uses this analogy to illustrate that even a small amount of genuine faith, when rooted in God, can have significant effects.
The Power of Faith:Throughout the Gospels, Jesus emphasizes the power of faith. He performs numerous miracles and healings, often attributing them to the faith of the individuals involved. Jesus teaches that faith has the ability to move mountains (Matthew 17:20) and that all things are possible for those who believe (Mark 9:23).
Cultivating Faith:While the apostles asked for an increase in faith, Jesus emphasizes the importance of nurturing and growing the faith they already possess. Faith is not something that can be instantly acquired or magically increased. It requires a personal relationship with God, continuous study of His Word, prayer, fellowship with other believers, and a willingness to surrender to His will.
Application:
- Recognize the significance of faith:Understand that faith is essential for salvation, relationship with God, and a victorious Christian life.
- Trust in God’s promises:Study the Word of God and meditate on His promises. Build your faith by knowing and believing in what God has revealed in His Word.
- Seek God’s guidance:Pray for an increase in faith and ask the Holy Spirit to help you grow in your trust and reliance on God.
- Step out in faith:Take steps of obedience and trust in God’s leading, even when circumstances seem challenging or uncertain. Faith requires action.
- Surround yourself with a community of believers:Engage in fellowship with other Christians who can encourage, challenge, and support your faith journey.
Remember, faith is a lifelong journey that requires perseverance and dependence on God. As you seek to increase your faith, trust in God’s faithfulness and His ability to strengthen and sustain you.
