Luke 17:6

Listen to this article

“And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.”

This verse is part of a larger teaching by Jesus to His disciples on the topic of faith. Let’s break it down and explore its meaning:

“And the Lord said”: This indicates that Jesus is the speaker. He often used parables, metaphors, and examples from nature to convey His teachings.

“If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed”: Jesus is emphasizing the importance of faith. The mustard seed was one of the smallest seeds known in that region, and it symbolizes the smallest measure of faith. Jesus is teaching that even a small amount of faith, like a mustard seed, can have great power.

“Ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea”: Jesus uses a hypothetical example to illustrate the power of faith. The sycamine tree mentioned here was known for its large and deep root system, making it difficult to uproot. Jesus implies that if one has faith, even as small as a mustard seed, they can command the tree to be uprooted and planted in the sea.

“And it should obey you”: Jesus emphasizes the authority that faith grants. If one truly has faith, they can exercise authority over the natural world, and even a seemingly impossible task like uprooting a tree and moving it to another location can be accomplished.

This verse teaches us several important lessons:

  • Faith is crucial: Jesus highlights the significance of having faith in God. Even the smallest amount of genuine faith can have extraordinary power and produce remarkable results.
  • Faith empowers believers: Jesus wants His disciples (and us) to understand that faith enables us to exercise authority. By aligning our faith with God’s will, we can see miraculous things happen.
  • Faith requires action: Jesus uses the example of speaking to the tree. Faith is not merely intellectual assent; it is active and requires us to take steps of obedience. When we exercise our faith, we align ourselves with God’s power and authority.
  • Faith can overcome obstacles: The image of uprooting a tree and planting it in the sea represents overcoming seemingly insurmountable challenges. With faith, we can face and conquer the obstacles in our lives, trusting in God’s power to work on our behalf.
