Luke 2:39
And when they had performed all things according to the Lawe of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their owne citie Nazareth. Luke 2:39 (KJV)
Historical Context: Luke 2:39 is part of the narrative of Jesus’ infancy and childhood. In the preceding verses we read about Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem for the census, the birth of Jesus in a manger, and the visit of the shepherds. After the birth, Mary and Joseph observed the Jewish customs, including the presentation of the child at the temple in Jerusalem.
Fulfillment of the Law: This verse emphasizes that Mary and Joseph faithfully fulfilled all the requirements of the Law of the Lord. According to the Law of Moses, a male child was to be circumcised on the eighth day after birth (Leviticus 12:3); they had Jesus circumcised and named Him (Luke 2:21). Mary also underwent the purification ceremony at the temple forty days after birth, as prescribed (Leviticus 12:4‑8), and they presented Jesus before the Lord as required (Exodus 13:2, 12).
Obedience and Faithfulness: Their actions demonstrate obedience to God’s commands and faithfulness to the customs of their Jewish faith. By respecting and following the Law diligently, they showed devotion to raising Jesus within the heritage of their religion and to honoring God’s instructions.
Return to Nazareth: After completing their religious obligations in Jerusalem, Mary and Joseph returned to their hometown of Nazareth in Galilee. This move fulfilled another Old‑Testament prophecy concerning the Messiah’s upbringing (e.g., Isaiah 11:1). Jesus grew up in Nazareth, which later became known as His hometown (Luke 4:16).
Application: Luke 2:39 teaches the importance of obedience and faithfulness to God’s commands. It reveals Mary and Joseph’s commitment to honoring the customs and traditions of their faith. As believers, we are called to follow God’s Word, fulfill our responsibilities, and live in obedience to His instructions, seeking to please Him just as Mary and Joseph did.
