Listen to this article

“And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.”

This verse is part of the account of Jesus’ presentation at the temple, following His birth. Let’s explore the context and deeper meaning of Luke 2:38.

Historical and Contextual Background:Luke 2:38 takes place shortly after the birth of Jesus. Mary and Joseph brought Him to the temple in Jerusalem to fulfill the requirements of the Law of Moses (Exodus 13:2, Exodus 13:12). In this specific passage, an encounter takes place between the baby Jesus and two devout individuals: Simeon and Anna.

Simeon’s Prophetic Declaration (Luke 2:25-35):

Before Luke 2:38, Luke records the prophetic declaration of Simeon, who was led by the Holy Spirit to the temple to see the promised Messiah. Simeon takes Jesus in his arms and praises God, saying that he can now depart in peace because he has seen the salvation of Israel.

Anna’s Response (Luke 2:36-38):

Immediately following Simeon’s prophetic words, Luke introduces Anna, a prophetess and widow who resided in the temple. Anna was known for her devotion to God and spent her days fasting and praying. When she sees the baby Jesus, she approaches Mary, Joseph, and Simeon and begins to give thanks to the Lord.

Giving Thanks Likewise:Luke 2:38 states, “And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord.” Anna’s response upon seeing Jesus is one of gratitude and thanksgiving to God. Her heart is filled with joy and appreciation for the fulfillment of God’s promises.

Spreading the Good News:The verse continues, “and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.” Anna’s encounter with Jesus leads her to share the news of His arrival with those who were eagerly awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem. She becomes a witness, testifying about the Messiah’s presence and spreading the good news.

Key Takeaways:

  • Luke 2:38 reveals the genuine faith and devotion of Anna, who had spent her life serving God in the temple.
  • Anna’s thanksgiving highlights the response of a heart that recognizes the significance of Jesus’ birth and the fulfillment of God’s promises.
  • Anna’s testimony serves as a reminder of the joyous news of redemption and salvation brought by the Messiah.
  • This verse emphasizes the importance of sharing the good news with others, as Anna proclaimed Jesus to all who anticipated the redemption of Jerusalem.

In conclusion, Luke 2:38 portrays Anna’s immediate response of thanksgiving upon encountering Jesus and her subsequent proclamation of the Messiah’s arrival. It serves as a powerful reminder of the joy and gratitude that comes with recognizing God’s faithfulness and the responsibility to share the good news with others.
