Listen to this article

“And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed!”

Context: Luke 22:22 is part of the account of Jesus’ last Passover meal with His disciples, commonly known as the Last Supper. During this meal, Jesus instituted the sacrament of communion and foretold His impending betrayal.

“And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined”: Here, Jesus is referring to His imminent departure or journey, indicating that He will soon face His crucifixion and subsequent death. Jesus often referred to Himself as the “Son of man,” emphasizing His humanity. The phrase “as it was determined” implies that Jesus’ suffering and death were part of God’s predetermined plan of salvation (Acts 2:23, 4:28).

“But woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed!”: Jesus expresses sorrow or woe over the one who would betray Him. He is referring to Judas Iscariot, who later betrays Jesus to the religious authorities for thirty pieces of silver (Matthew 26:14-16). This statement reveals Jesus’ awareness of the betrayal and His compassion for Judas, even though He knows the consequences Judas will face.

  • Divine Providence and Foreknowledge: Jesus acknowledges that His suffering and death are part of God’s predetermined plan. This highlights the concept of divine providence, demonstrating that even in the midst of human betrayal and suffering, God remains in control. It reminds us that God can work through difficult circumstances to accomplish His purposes.
  • Consequences of Betrayal: Jesus pronounces a solemn warning of woe upon the one who would betray Him. This indicates that betraying Jesus, who is the Son of God and the embodiment of truth and love, carries severe consequences. It serves as a reminder that our actions have consequences, and betraying the trust of others can lead to personal and spiritual destruction.
  • Jesus’ Compassion: Despite knowing that He would be betrayed, Jesus still expresses compassion for Judas. This demonstrates His boundless love and desire for repentance and restoration, even for those who betray Him. It teaches us to respond to betrayal with a compassionate heart, seeking redemption and forgiveness rather than harboring bitterness or seeking revenge.
  • Luke 22:22 challenges us to reflect on our own actions and relationships. It prompts us to consider whether we are living in alignment with God’s will and whether we are faithful in our commitments to others. Additionally, it encourages us to extend compassion and forgiveness to those who have betrayed us, seeking reconciliation and restoration where possible.

Overall, Luke 22:22 reminds us of the profound depth of Jesus’ love, the significance of His sacrifice, and the importance of fidelity and forgiveness in our own lives.
