And they began to enquire among themselues, which of them it was that should doe this thing. Luke 22:23 (KJV)

Before we delve into Luke 22:23, it is essential to understand the surrounding context. Jesus had just announced to His disciples that one of them would betray Him (Luke 22:21‑22). This revelation shocked the disciples, leaving them perplexed and troubled.

The verse records, “And they began to enquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing.” In response to Jesus’ statement, the disciples started discussing among themselves who among them could possibly betray their Teacher. Their aim was to understand the situation more clearly and to discover who might be involved.

This passage reflects the human tendency to question, speculate, and seek answers when faced with challenging circumstances. The disciples’ reactions demonstrate their deep concern for Jesus and their desire to comprehend the gravity of what was about to unfold.

Their response also reveals the attitudes of their hearts. Rather than immediately claiming innocence or pointing fingers, they engaged in self‑reflection and examination. This shows a measure of humility and a willingness to search their own hearts to see if they could be the one who would betray Jesus.

The disciples’ questioning fulfills the prophetic words of Psalm 41:9: “Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me.” That prophecy foreshadowed the betrayal of Jesus by one of His closest followers, Judas Iscariot.

In conclusion, Luke 22:23 portrays the disciples’ response to Jesus’ announcement of betrayal. It reveals their concern, the introspective nature of their discussions, and the connection to Old Testament prophecy concerning the betrayal of the Messiah.
