Luke 23:47

Listen to this article

“Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man.”

Context:Luke 23:47 is part of the narrative describing the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It occurs at the moment of Jesus’ death on the cross, just after He cried out with a loud voice and yielded His spirit.

The Centurion’s Testimony:In this verse, a Roman centurion, who was overseeing the crucifixion, witnessed the events surrounding Jesus’ death. When he saw how Jesus conducted Himself during His crucifixion and the signs that accompanied it, the centurion was convinced that Jesus was a righteous man. He glorified God and made this proclamation.

A Righteous Man:The centurion’s statement acknowledges Jesus’ righteousness. It affirms that Jesus lived a blameless and morally upright life. Despite the unjust treatment and suffering He endured, Jesus demonstrated righteousness in His words and actions. The centurion’s testimony highlights the character of Jesus as a man who was without fault.

Implications for Believers:a. Confirmation of Jesus’ Identity: The centurion’s testimony serves as an external affirmation of Jesus’ identity. It echoes the words of others who recognized Jesus as the Son of God or as a righteous person throughout the Gospel accounts.

b. Divine Revelation: The centurion’s recognition of Jesus’ righteousness reveals the work of the Holy Spirit, who can bring revelation and conviction even to those who are not part of the Jewish community or have no prior knowledge of the Scriptures.

c. Response to Jesus: The centurion’s response challenges believers to reflect on their own response to Jesus. If someone who witnessed Jesus’ crucifixion can acknowledge His righteousness, how much more should we, who have access to the full revelation of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection through the Scriptures, recognize His righteousness and respond in faith and obedience.

Glorifying God:The centurion’s declaration not only acknowledges Jesus’ righteousness but also glorifies God. It points to the divine nature of Jesus’ mission and the significance of His sacrifice on the cross. The centurion’s response reminds believers to give glory to God for the redemptive work accomplished through Jesus.
