And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned. Luke 23:48 (KJV)

Luke 23:48 is a verse found in the Gospel of Luke, which records the events surrounding the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. This verse comes after Jesus breathed his last and died on the cross. It describes the reaction of the people who witnessed the crucifixion and the events that took place.

“All the people that came together” refers to the crowd that had gathered at Golgotha, the place of the crucifixion. The text does not specify exactly who was in the crowd, and it likely included a wide range of individuals, from the religious leaders to the common people who happened to be present.

“Beholding the things which were done” indicates that the onlookers were observing the events before their eyes. They witnessed the suffering of Jesus, the darkness that covered the land (Luke 23:44‑45), and the tearing of the temple veil. The account does not mention an earthquake.

“Smote their breasts” signifies an expression of deep grief, remorse, or mourning. It was a common Jewish custom to strike or beat one’s chest as a sign of sorrow or repentance, showing the weight of the moment and the recognition that something significant had occurred.

“Returned” (or “went away”) shows that the people eventually left the scene and went back to their homes or continued with their daily activities. The crucifixion of Jesus deeply affected them, causing them to reflect on what they had witnessed.

Lessons from Luke 23:48: The crucifixion of Jesus impacted those who witnessed it. It was a profound event that stirred emotions and caused people to reflect on its significance. The response of the people, striking their breasts, indicates a sense of remorse or mourning and underscores the gravity of the occasion.

Application: Reflect on the crucifixion of Jesus and the sacrifice He made for our salvation. Consider the impact it has on your life and respond with gratitude and repentance. Take time to meditate on the depth of Jesus’ love for humanity, as demonstrated through His death on the cross. Allow this to deepen your relationship with Him and inspire you to live a life that honors and glorifies Him. Share the good news of Jesus’ sacrifice with others, so they too may come to understand the significance of His death and experience the transformative power of His love.

Remember to study the entire chapter of Luke 23 to gain a deeper understanding of the context and the events leading up to this verse. May your study of God’s Word bring you closer to Him and enrich your faith.
