Luke 4:15

And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.

Luke 4:15 (KJV)

Luke 4:15 is a summary statement within the narrative of Jesus’ early Galilean ministry. The preceding verse (Luke 4:14) establishes that Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit after His wilderness temptation, and that news about Him spread throughout the region. This verse describes His activity: He taught in the synagogues, and the people glorified Him. The progression from Luke 4:14 to 4:15 shows Jesus returning in the Spirit’s power, His fame spreading, and then His teaching being received with admiration.

The synagogues were local Jewish places of worship and study where the community met on the Sabbath and weekdays to read, pray, and hear the Scriptures expounded. It was customary for visiting teachers to be given the opportunity to speak to the congregation. Jesus took advantage of this opportunity to share His teachings and proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God.

The phrase “glorified of all” (Greek: doxazomenos hypo panton) conveys the sense of being honored or praised by all. This indicates that Jesus commanded respect and admiration for His teaching. His words were powerful and impactful, capturing the attention and hearts of the people who heard Him. His teaching was not merely informative but carried an authority that evoked awe and reverence among the listeners.

This public acceptance, however, was not universal or permanent. The narrative that follows (Luke 4:16-30) shows that His own townspeople in Nazareth would eventually reject Him. This contrast highlights that the admiration Jesus received in Luke 4:15 was genuine but not the final response to His ministry. It also underscores that Jesus operated within the established religious structures of His day, using the synagogues as venues for proclaiming His message.

  • The importance of teaching: Jesus prioritized teaching and used the synagogues as platforms to disseminate His message. As followers of Christ, we are called to continue His ministry of teaching and sharing the gospel. We can utilize various avenues such as church services, Bible studies, and personal interactions to teach others about God’s Word and the good news of salvation.

  • The power of God’s Word: Jesus’ teaching resonated with the people because His words carried the authority and power of God. As we engage in teaching, we must rely on the Word of God and allow the Holy Spirit to guide us. God’s Word has the ability to transform lives and bring about spiritual growth in individuals and communities.

  • Recognition and opposition: Jesus’ teaching drew both admiration and opposition. While He was glorified by many, others rejected His teachings and sought to undermine His authority. As we faithfully teach God’s Word, we may encounter similar responses. However, our focus should remain on the truth of God’s Word, rather than seeking popularity or approval.

Luke 4:15 portrays Jesus’ teaching ministry in the synagogues, where He was honored and respected by the people. This verse underscores the significance of teaching and the authority of Jesus’ words. As believers, we can learn from Jesus’ example and faithfully engage in teaching, relying on the power of God’s Word and allowing it to transform lives.
