Luke 5:11

“And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.”

Context:In this verse, Jesus had just called Simon Peter, James, and John to be His disciples. They were fishermen who had been fishing all night but caught nothing. Jesus asked them to let down their nets again, and miraculously, they caught such a great number of fish that their nets were breaking. Overwhelmed by this miracle, they left everything behind and decided to follow Jesus.

Surrendering All:The disciples’ response to Jesus’ miracle is significant. They “forsook all” to follow Him. This demonstrates their willingness to leave behind their livelihood, possessions, and familiar way of life to pursue a new calling. It teaches us the importance of surrendering everything to Jesus when He calls us, including our plans, ambitions, and even material possessions.

Following Jesus:The disciples’ decision to follow Jesus is a crucial aspect of their faith. They recognised Jesus’ authority and saw something in Him that compelled them to leave everything and become His disciples. This act of following Jesus implies obedience, trust, and a commitment to learn from and imitate Him. It serves as an example for us, showing the kind of radical commitment we are called to have as His followers.

Faith and Obedience:The disciples’ response displays both faith and obedience. Despite their exhaustion from a night of unsuccessful fishing, they trusted Jesus’ words and obeyed His command to let down their nets. Their obedience was rewarded with a miraculous catch. This teaches us that true faith is demonstrated through obedience to God’s commands, even when they seem illogical or difficult.

Priorities and Sacrifice:By forsaking all, the disciples prioritised Jesus above everything else. They recognised that following Him was of utmost importance, more significant than their fishing business and personal pursuits. This challenges us to evaluate our priorities and be willing to make sacrifices when it comes to following Christ. It may involve giving up certain comforts, ambitions, or relationships to fully devote ourselves to Him.
