Luke 5:27

Listen to this article

“And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me.”

Historical Context:Luke 5:27 is part of the narrative of Jesus’ ministry on earth. In this verse, Jesus encounters a tax collector named Levi, who is also known as Matthew (as mentioned in the parallel account in Matthew 9:9). Tax collectors were often seen as social outcasts in Jewish society because they were considered collaborators with the Roman government and were known for their dishonest practices.

  • The Calling of Levi:

In this verse, Jesus approaches Levi while he is sitting at the receipt of custom, which was likely a tax collection booth or office. Jesus issues a simple command to Levi, saying, “Follow me.” This invitation to follow Jesus is significant because it represents Jesus’ call to discipleship.

Symbolism and Spiritual Implications:a. Jesus’ acceptance of sinners: The fact that Jesus approaches a tax collector, someone despised and rejected by society, demonstrates His willingness to reach out to those considered outcasts. It emphasises Jesus’ message of grace and salvation for all, regardless of their social status or past sins.

b. The power of divine calling: Jesus’ command to Levi to “Follow me” illustrates the authority and power of His divine calling. It reveals Jesus’ ability to transform lives and redirect them towards a new purpose. Levi’s response to Jesus’ call demonstrates the transformative power of encountering Christ.

Levi’s Response and Transformation:Verse 28 describes Levi’s immediate response: “And he left all, rose up, and followed him.” This indicates Levi’s willingness to leave behind his old life and follow Jesus. Levi’s response is an act of faith, trust, and surrender to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. It demonstrates the radical transformation that occurs when someone encounters Jesus and responds to His call.

Application to our lives:

  • Embracing grace and forgiveness:Just as Jesus accepted Levi, who was a sinner and outcast, we can find comfort in knowing that Jesus extends the same grace and forgiveness to us. No matter our past or current circumstances, Jesus offers redemption and the opportunity for a transformed life.
  • Responding to Jesus’ call:Like Levi, we are called to respond to Jesus’ invitation to follow Him. Following Jesus involves surrendering our lives, leaving behind our old ways, and committing to a life of discipleship. It requires us to prioritise Christ and seek His will above all else.
  • Sharing the good news:Levi’s immediate response was to leave everything behind and follow Jesus. This example challenges us to examine our own commitment to Christ and our willingness to let go of anything that hinders our relationship with Him. Additionally, it encourages us to share the good news of Jesus Christ with others, extending His invitation of grace to all.

In conclusion, Luke 5:27 highlights Jesus’ acceptance of sinners, the power of His divine calling, and Levi’s transformation as he responds to Jesus’ call to follow Him. This verse serves as a reminder of God’s grace and His desire to transform our lives when we choose to surrender and follow Him.
