Luke 5:28

And he left all, rose vp, and followed him. Luke 5:28 (KJV)

After these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me. And he left all, rose up, and followed him. This passage is part of the narrative of Jesus’ ministry, specifically his calling of Levi, also known as Matthew, to be one of his disciples. Levi was a tax collector, a profession despised by many in Jewish society because tax collectors were seen as collaborators with the Roman oppressors and often engaged in extortion.

Jesus encounters Levi sitting at the receipt of custom, which was likely a tax collection booth or a place where taxes were collected. Despite societal disdain, Jesus sees potential in Levi and extends an invitation: “Follow me.” The call to “follow me” was an invitation to become a disciple and to walk closely with Jesus, learning from him and participating in his mission.

Levi’s response to Jesus’ call is remarkable. The verse says, “And he left all, rose up, and followed him.” Levi’s decision to follow Jesus involved leaving behind his lucrative profession, his source of income, and the life he had known. His response demonstrates a radical and immediate obedience to Jesus’ call, indicating his recognition of the significance of Jesus’ invitation and the desire to pursue a new life.

Levi’s immediate response teaches us the importance of being willing to respond when Jesus calls us. Jesus calls each of us to follow him, to surrender our lives to him, and to participate in his mission. Levi’s willingness to leave everything behind reminds us that following Jesus often requires sacrifice. It may involve letting go of certain attachments, habits, or relationships that hinder our spiritual growth and commitment to Christ. Levi’s response demonstrates trust and faith in Jesus. He had faith that following Jesus was more valuable than the material wealth and societal status he possessed. It teaches us that faith in Christ should be the foundation of our decisions and actions. Levi’s immediate response also highlights the essence of discipleship. Discipleship involves a personal commitment to learn from Jesus, imitate his character, and join him in his redemptive work.

Are we willing to respond to Jesus’ call to follow him, regardless of the cost? Reflect on areas of your life where Jesus may be calling you to make changes and align your life more closely with his teachings. Are there things in your life that hinder your relationship with Christ? Consider what you may need to let go of in order to follow Jesus more wholeheartedly. Do you trust Jesus enough to follow him even when it requires stepping into the unknown or making sacrifices? Cultivate a deeper trust in Christ and strengthen your faith through prayer, studying the Word, and relying on the Holy Spirit. Are you actively engaged in learning from Jesus and participating in his mission? Seek opportunities to grow as a disciple, whether it be through Bible study, fellowship with other believers, serving in your local church, or engaging in acts of compassion and justice.

Remember, Luke 5:27‑28 is not just the story of Levi but also an invitation to each of us to respond to Jesus’ call to follow him. May we have the courage, faith, and obedience to say “yes” to his invitation and embark on the journey of discipleship.
