Luke 7:31
“And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?”
Context:This verse is part of a larger passage that records a conversation between Jesus and the crowds regarding John the Baptist.
In the preceding verses, Jesus had just finished praising John’s ministry, calling him a prophet and more than a prophet (Luke 7:24-28). However, He then goes on to address the people’s response to both John’s message and His own ministry.
In Luke 7:31, Jesus poses a question to the crowd, asking them to consider the people of “this generation.” By using this term, Jesus refers to the people living during that time. He often used it to highlight their spiritual condition and their general attitude towards God’s messengers.
The verse implies that Jesus was observing the response of the people around Him and their lack of understanding. He wanted to illustrate the challenge of communicating the message of God’s kingdom effectively to those who were not receptive.
Jesus continues this discourse in the following verses (Luke 7:32-35) by making a comparison between the people of that generation and children. He highlights the inconsistency in their expectations, likening them to children who were not satisfied, neither with John’s austere lifestyle nor with His own approach. Some considered John to be too strict, while others criticized Jesus for associating with sinners.
Through this comparison, Jesus points out that the people had preconceived notions about how the kingdom of God should be manifested and were unwilling to accept the messengers God sent to them, whether strict or lenient. This passage highlights the unresponsive and stubborn nature of the people towards the message of salvation.
In essence, Luke 7:31 invites readers to reflect on their own response to God’s messengers and the message of the kingdom. It encourages us to examine our attitudes, expectations, and openness to God’s Word. Like the people in Jesus’ time, we can also have preconceived ideas or preferences about how God should work in our lives. This verse challenges us to be open to His guidance, even when it doesn’t align with our expectations.
By considering Luke 7:31 in its context and understanding the message Jesus conveyed, we can be prompted to evaluate our own hearts and respond with humility and openness to the ways God chooses to reveal Himself and His kingdom in our lives.
