Luke 7:32

Listen to this article

They are like vnto children sitting in the market place, & calling one to another, and saying, We haue piped vnto you, and ye haue not danced: wee haue mourned to you, and yee haue not wept. Luke 7:32 (KJV)

For wisdom is proved among all her children. In this verse Jesus is addressing those who were comparing Him to John the Baptist. He points out that the people’s reaction to both John and Himself reveals a lack of understanding. Jesus likens His generation to children in the marketplace who cannot decide whether to play a joyful tune or to mourn, exposing their inconsistency and shortsightedness.

The folly of the people is evident in their criticism of John for his ascetic lifestyle and of Jesus for His association with sinners. Their inability to discern the truth shows they do not appreciate the wisdom of God. By saying that wisdom is proved among all her children, Jesus emphasizes that true wisdom will ultimately be vindicated and recognized by those who possess it. The fruit or outcomes of wisdom validate its authenticity.

Wisdom has a transformative effect on individuals. Those who embrace and follow wisdom will bear its fruit in their lives; these “children” of wisdom become the ones who justify and validate the wisdom they have received. However, not everyone will recognize or appreciate true wisdom. Biases, limited understanding, and a refusal to embrace wisdom can lead to rejection or criticism. Those who genuinely seek wisdom with a humble heart will be able to recognize and appreciate it.

Application and relevance flow naturally from this teaching. Believers are called to pursue wisdom by seeking God’s guidance through His Word and prayer, allowing it to shape decisions and actions. Our lives should reflect the wisdom we have received; the choices we make, the way we treat others, and the fruit we bear demonstrate the authenticity and impact of God’s wisdom. A transformed life becomes a testimony to the truth and validity of divine wisdom.

When faced with criticism or rejection because of our faith or commitment to God’s wisdom, we should not be discouraged. Instead, we can find solace in knowing that true wisdom will ultimately be justified. Our consistent walk with God and the positive outcomes of our choices speak for themselves.

Finally, we must be discerning in evaluating ideas and teachings. True wisdom aligns with God’s Word and produces godly fruit. Testing everything against the standard of God’s wisdom and seeking the Holy Spirit’s guidance enables us to recognize and embrace what is truly wise.

In summary, Luke 7:35 teaches that true wisdom will ultimately be recognized and validated by its fruits. As followers of Christ, we should pursue wisdom, bear its fruit in our lives, and be confident in its ultimate vindication, even when facing criticism or rejection from others.
