Luke 8:3

And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance.

Luke 8:3 (KJV)

Luke 8:1-3 places this verse within Jesus’ journey through towns and villages, preaching the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve accompanied Him, along with women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities. These women were not passive observers but active participants in the ministry, providing for Jesus and His disciples out of their own resources.

The verse names three women: Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward; Susanna; and many others. The Greek word translated “ministered” (diēkonoun) indicates active service, and the phrase “of their substance” (ek tōn hyparchontōn autais) means they gave from their own possessions or private means. Their support likely included food, lodging, and financial help, enabling Jesus and the Twelve to continue their itinerant preaching.

Joanna’s connection to Herod’s court is significant. Her husband, Chuza, was a high-ranking official, which implies she had wealth and social standing. Yet she chose to support Jesus, even though Herod Antipas later played a role in Jesus’ trial. This suggests a courageous and costly commitment.

Susanna is named here but no further details are given about her in Scripture. Her inclusion, along with “many others,” shows that the support for Jesus’ ministry was widespread and not limited to a few prominent women.

This passage connects to the broader Gospel theme of faithful stewardship. In Luke 8:1-3, Jesus accepts financial support from women, which was culturally countercultural in that era.

Joanna, Susanna, and the others used their resources to advance God’s kingdom. Their example teaches us to use our money, time, skills, and influence to support the work of Christ. Faithful stewardship is not limited to those in religious leadership; it includes all who give from what God has entrusted to them.

This verse challenges us to consider how we support the gospel. Do we give sacrificially and consistently, as these women did? Their quiet, faithful service reminds us that every contribution, no matter how small or unseen, matters to God and His mission.
