Luke 9:23

“And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”

Context:It is essential to understand the context in which this verse appears. In the preceding verses, Jesus had just revealed to His disciples that He would suffer, be rejected, killed, and rise again on the third day (Luke 9:22). Then, Jesus addresses not only His disciples but also the crowd, teaching them the cost of following Him.

Willingness to Follow:The verse begins with the words, “If any man will come after me.” Jesus is inviting everyone to follow Him. It emphasises that following Jesus is a matter of personal choice and commitment. It requires a deliberate decision to accept Him as Lord and Saviour.

Denying Oneself:Jesus instructs those who want to follow Him to deny themselves. Denying oneself means to put Jesus and His will above our desires, ambitions, and preferences. It involves surrendering our selfishness and yielding to God’s purposes and plans.

Taking up the Cross:Taking up one’s cross daily refers to embracing the hardships, challenges, and sacrifices that come with being a disciple of Christ. In Jesus’ time, a cross was a symbol of suffering and shame. By using this imagery, Jesus emphasises that following Him involves a willingness to endure persecution, opposition, and even death if necessary.

Daily Commitment:Jesus emphasises that taking up the cross is not a one-time event but a daily commitment. It is a continuous, lifelong process of dying to self and living for Christ. Each day, we are called to make a conscious choice to follow Jesus, obeying Him and aligning our lives with His teachings.

Following Jesus:The verse concludes by urging believers to follow Jesus. Following Jesus means more than being a mere admirer or supporter. It implies actively walking in His footsteps, imitating His character, and living according to His teachings. It involves developing an intimate relationship with Him, seeking His guidance, and becoming His disciple.
