Malachi 2:15

Posted on 18 May at 14:14
Listen to this article

“And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.”

Context:Malachi was a prophet who delivered God’s message to the people of Israel after their return from Babylonian captivity. The book of Malachi contains a series of messages addressing the spiritual condition and behaviour of the priests and the people of Israel.

Unity of Marriage:

In Malachi 2:15, God emphasises the unity of marriage and the importance of faithfulness. The verse starts by reminding the people that God made one man and one woman to be united in marriage. This unity is not only physical but also spiritual, as they share the “residue of the spirit,” meaning they are connected at a deep level.

Purpose of Marriage:

God states the purpose of this unity in marriage is for the couple to produce “a godly seed.” One of the primary purposes of marriage is to bring forth children who will be raised in a godly manner. God desires a righteous generation, and the institution of marriage plays a crucial role in achieving this purpose.

Take Heed to Your Spirit:

The verse continues with a warning to the people to “take heed to your spirit.” This implies that they need to be mindful of their actions and attitudes within their marriages. They should guard their hearts and spirits against anything that would lead them away from faithfulness and commitment to their spouses.

Treachery and Faithfulness:

The verse concludes with a warning against dealing treacherously against the “wife of his youth.” God condemns any form of treachery, unfaithfulness, or betrayal within marriage. The phrase “wife of his youth” highlights the importance of cherishing and honouring the covenant made in the early years of marriage.

Application:

Application:This verse serves as a reminder to believers about the sacredness of marriage and the need for faithfulness. It encourages spouses to be mindful of their actions, thoughts, and attitudes within their marriages. It also calls for the preservation of the marital bond and discourages any behaviour that could lead to infidelity or betrayal. Overall, Malachi 2:15 highlights God’s design for marriage, the purpose of raising a godly generation, and the importance of faithfulness and integrity within the marital relationship.
