Malachi 2:16

Posted on 18 May at 14:52

“For the Lord, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the Lord of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.”

Context:Malachi was a prophet sent by God to deliver His messages to the people of Israel after their return from exile in Babylon. In this particular verse, Malachi addresses the issue of divorce and the unfaithfulness prevalent among the Israelites.

The Lord Hates Divorce:The verse begins with a strong statement from God: “For the Lord, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away.” Here, “putting away” refers to divorce. God’s intention for marriage is that it be a lifelong covenant between a husband and wife (Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:6). Divorce goes against God’s original design and causes pain and brokenness. God’s statement reflects His deep concern for the sacredness of marriage and His desire for marital relationships to thrive.

Covering Violence:The verse continues, “for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the Lord of hosts.” This phrase can be understood as a metaphorical expression describing the harm caused by divorce. It suggests that divorce can be a way of concealing or masking the true violence and harm that may exist within a marriage. Instead of addressing and resolving the issues, divorce becomes an escape that perpetuates the cycle of violence and brokenness.

Take Heed to Your Spirit:The verse concludes with a cautionary message: “therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.” Here, God urges the Israelites to be cautious and mindful of their own actions, especially in matters of faithfulness and commitment within marriage. It emphasizes the importance of honoring the marriage covenant, being faithful to one’s spouse, and avoiding treacherous behavior.

Application:While Malachi 2:16 addresses the Israelites’ specific context, its principles have relevance for believers today. It reminds us of God’s deep concern for the sacredness of marriage and the damaging effects of divorce. As followers of Christ, we are called to value and protect our marital relationships, seeking reconciliation and forgiveness rather than resorting to divorce. It is a reminder to prioritize faithfulness, commitment, and the well-being of our spouse and family.

  • In conclusion:Malachi 2:16 delivers a strong message about God’s perspective on divorce, emphasizing His hatred for divorce and the need for faithfulness within marriage. It encourages believers to take heed to their spirit and approach their relationships with integrity, seeking to honour God’s design for marriage.
