Malachi 4 is the final chapter of the Old Testament book of Malachi. It begins by describing a day of judgment that will come, referred to as the “day that burns like an oven.” On that day, the wicked will be consumed, and the proud and evildoers will be destroyed. However, for those who fear God’s name, a different future awaits. They will experience healing and righteousness, leaping like calves released from a stall.
The chapter then mentions the return of the prophet Elijah before the great and dreadful day of the Lord. Elijah’s role will be to turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, fostering reconciliation and unity.
The book of Malachi concludes with a powerful promise. God assures the people of Israel that before the day of judgment, He will send Elijah to prepare the way and bring restoration to their relationships. If the people heed Elijah’s message and repent, they will be spared from the impending judgment.
