Malachi 4:5

Posted on 18 May at 14:52

“Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD.”

Context:The book of Malachi is the last book in the Old Testament, and it was written to the Israelites who had returned from exile in Babylon. Malachi delivered a message of rebuke, correction, and hope to the people, addressing issues such as spiritual apathy, unfaithfulness, and corruption.

The Promise of Elijah’s Coming:In Malachi 4:5, God promises to send Elijah the prophet before the “great and dreadful day of the LORD.” This prophecy refers to the future, emphasizing the role of Elijah as a precursor to significant events that will take place.

Elijah’s Identity:The mention of Elijah in this verse does not refer to the literal return of the prophet Elijah himself. Instead, it points to a figure who will come in the spirit and power of Elijah. This prophecy was fulfilled in the New Testament through the ministry of John the Baptist.

John the Baptist as the Elijah Figure:Jesus confirmed that John the Baptist fulfilled the prophecy of Elijah’s coming. In Matthew 11:14, Jesus said, “And if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah who is to come.” John the Baptist prepared the way for the coming of Jesus Christ, just as Elijah was known as a forerunner of God’s divine intervention.

The Great and Dreadful Day of the LORD:The phrase “the great and dreadful day of the LORD” refers to a future day of judgment and divine intervention. In biblical language, it often signifies the end times or the final day of reckoning when God’s justice will be fully executed. It emphasizes the seriousness and magnitude of God’s judgment on evil and His establishment of His kingdom.

Application:The prophecy of Elijah’s coming before the great day of the LORD serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness to fulfil His promises. It also highlights the importance of repentance and preparation for the coming of the Lord. Just as John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus, we are called to prepare our hearts and lives for Christ’s second coming by turning away from sin and seeking righteousness.

  • In conclusion, Malachi 4:5 points to the fulfilment of the prophecy through John the Baptist, who prepared the way for Jesus. It also reminds us of the significance of being prepared for the great and dreadful day of the LORD, calling us to repentance and readiness for Christ’s return.
