Matthew 2:10

When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

Matthew 2:10 (KJV)

The wise men from the East had seen a star that signaled the birth of the King of the Jews. They traveled to Jerusalem and inquired about the newborn king, which troubled Herod and all Jerusalem. Herod gathered the chief priests and scribes, who told him that the Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem, as the prophet Micah had written. As the wise men left Herod, the star they had seen in the East went before them until it stood over the place where the child was.

When the wise men saw the star again, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. The phrase “exceeding great joy” is a Hebrew pleonasm, a deliberate redundancy that emphasizes the intensity and magnitude of their joy. This was not ordinary happiness but overwhelming, profound joy. They recognized the star as the same one they had seen in their own country, confirming that they were on the right path. Its reappearance filled them with renewed hope and certainty that they were about to find the King they sought.

The star was a supernatural sign from God that guided them to Jesus. Their joy was a response to divine guidance and the fulfillment of prophecy. The contrast is striking: Herod and all Jerusalem were troubled by the news of the Messiah, but the wise men rejoiced. Their joy models the appropriate response to God’s revelation and guidance.

  • God’s guidance: The star and the joy it brought illustrate God’s guidance in the wise men’s journey. God reveals Himself to those who seek Him diligently and follow His leading. We can trust that God will lead us on the right path.

  • The fulfillment of prophecy: The wise men’s joy arose from recognizing that the prophecies about the King of the Jews were being fulfilled. This reminds us of God’s faithfulness in keeping His Word. We can find comfort and joy in the certainty that God remains faithful to His covenant.

  • The joy of encountering Jesus: The wise men’s joy reached its peak when they finally encountered Jesus. Similarly, encountering Jesus in our lives brings exceeding great joy. Jesus is the source of true joy and fulfillment. As we seek Him, worship Him, and grow in relationship with Him, we experience a joy that surpasses understanding.

  • Responding to God’s revelation: The wise men’s joy and subsequent worship teach us the importance of responding to God’s revelation. When God reveals Himself through His Word, creation, or Spirit, it should evoke joy, worship, and obedience.

The wise men’s joy was not merely emotional; it was tied to the certainty that they were about to find the King. Their response challenges us to examine our own response to God’s guidance. Do we rejoice when God confirms His leading, or do we respond with indifference? The exceeding great joy of the wise men invites us to approach God with expectant hearts, ready to worship the One who has revealed Himself to us.
