Listen to this article

And being warned of God in a dreame, that they should not returne to Herode, they departed into their owne countrey another way. Matthew 2:12 (KJV)

Context: Matthew 2:12 is part of the narrative of the visit of the magi, or wise men, to the young Jesus. These magi came from the East, following a star that signaled the birth of the King of the Jews. They arrived in Jerusalem and inquired about the location of the child, causing King Herod and all of Jerusalem to be troubled.

Divine Warning: In this verse we learn that the magi received a divine warning from God in a dream. The warning instructed them not to return to Herod and reveal the whereabouts of Jesus. The dream served as a means of divine guidance and protection for both the magi and the infant Messiah.

Obedience to God’s Warning: Recognising the significance of the message, the magi obeyed God’s instruction. They chose not to go back to Herod, but instead departed for their own country by another route. This decision was crucial because Herod’s intentions were deceitful and he sought to destroy the child.

Faith and Trust: Their response demonstrates faith and trust in God’s guidance. Despite possible political and cultural repercussions, they were willing to alter their plans and take a different path, relying solely on God’s direction. Their obedience reflects an acknowledgment of God’s authority and His ability to protect and guide.

Application: The account of the magi in Matthew 2:12 teaches several lessons. First, it highlights the importance of being sensitive to God’s guidance and open to His leading. Second, it underscores the need for obedience to God’s instructions, even when they are inconvenient or challenging. Finally, it reminds believers to place their faith and trust in God’s sovereignty and protective power.

Summary: Matthew 2:12 records the divine warning given to the magi in a dream and their subsequent obedience in not returning to Herod, illustrating the blessings that follow faithful responsiveness to God’s direction.
