Mark 11:1

“And when they came nigh to Jerusalem, unto Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount of Olives, he sendeth forth two of his disciples.”

Jesus and His disciples were approaching Jerusalem during the final week of His earthly ministry. This period is commonly referred to as the “Passion Week” or “Holy Week.” They were in the region near Jerusalem, specifically in Bethphage and Bethany, which were neighbouring towns located at the Mount of Olives.

2. Symbolism of the Mount of Olives: The Mount of Olives holds special significance in the Bible. It was a place Jesus often visited during His ministry. In this verse, the Mount of Olives represents a significant transition point in Jesus’ journey towards Jerusalem, which ultimately leads to His crucifixion and resurrection.

3. The Sending of Two Disciples: Jesus sent two of His disciples ahead of Him to fulfil a specific purpose. Throughout His ministry, Jesus often sent His disciples on various missions, demonstrating their involvement and participation in His work. In this case, Jesus sends two disciples to make preparations for His entry into Jerusalem.

• b. Jesus’ Careful Planning and Fulfillment of Prophecy: Jesus’ sending of two disciples ahead of Him to find the colt reveals His careful planning and intentionality. It emphasises His fulfilment of Old Testament prophecies, highlighting His divine nature and purpose.
• c. Humility and Servanthood: Jesus, the King of kings, chose to enter Jerusalem humbly, riding on a colt. This teaches us the importance of humility and servant leadership in our lives. We should strive to follow Jesus’ example by serving others with humility and grace.
• d. The Sovereignty and Authority of Jesus: Jesus’ actions in this passage display His authority over all things. He knew exactly where the colt would be and orchestrated events to fulfil prophecy. This reminds us of His sovereignty and control over every aspect of our lives.
