Mark 11:18

Context:In the preceding verses (Mark 11:12-14), Jesus cursed a barren fig tree that had leaves but no fruit. The next morning, as Jesus and His disciples passed by the same tree, it had withered from the roots up. This miraculous event symbolized the impending judgment on the religious leaders and the nation of Israel for their spiritual barrenness and lack of genuine faith.

Verse Analysis:1. “And the scribes and chief priests heard it”: The scribes and chief priests were religious authorities and part of the Jewish ruling council, the Sanhedrin. They heard about Jesus’ curse of the fig tree and were aware of His teachings and actions.

“And sought how they might destroy him”:The religious leaders, threatened by Jesus’ authority and popularity, plotted to destroy Him. They felt challenged and fearful because Jesus exposed their hypocrisy and their deviation from the true teachings of God.

“For they feared him because all the people was astonished at his doctrine”:The religious leaders feared Jesus because the common people were amazed by His teachings. Jesus’ words had authority and authenticity, which contrasted with the empty religious traditions propagated by the religious elite.

Mark 11:18 highlights the opposition Jesus faced from the religious leaders, who were more concerned with preserving their power and authority than seeking the truth.
