Mark 12:15

Shall we give, or shall we not give? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why tempt ye me? bring me a penny, that I may see it.

Context

This verse belongs to the larger passage often called the “Question about Paying Taxes” (Mark 12:13-17). The Pharisees and Herodians, unlikely allies, came to Jesus with a question about paying taxes to Caesar. Their question was not a sincere search for truth but a trap, hoping that no matter how Jesus answered, they could accuse Him of either treason against Rome or disloyalty to the Jewish people.

Meaning

In verse 15, they ask, “Shall we give, or shall we not give?” The question is not only about what is lawful but also about what is advisable, so that they might accuse Him. Jesus, being fully aware of their hypocrisy, responds, “Why tempt ye me? bring me a penny, that I may see it.” The word “penny” in the KJV translates the Greek word “denarius,” a Roman coin used to pay taxes. The KJV footnote notes that this penny was “valuing of our money seven pence halfpenny.” By asking for the coin, Jesus highlighted the coin’s image of Caesar, implicitly acknowledging Caesar’s authority over the region, and exposed their reliance on Roman currency. He was not fooled by their deceitful questioning, and He skillfully turned the tables on them, forcing them to face the reality of their own actions and their allegiance to Caesar.

In the following verse, Jesus uses the coin’s image and superscription to give His famous answer: “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s” (Mark 12:17).
