Mark 12:23

Posted on 18 May at 14:43
Listen to this article

“The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him, saying,”

Context: In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her to wife. Mark 12:23 (KJV)

This verse is part of a larger passage where Jesus is engaged in a dialogue with various groups challenging Him, including the Sadducees. In this particular encounter, the Sadducees approach Jesus to question Him about the concept of resurrection.

To better understand the significance of this verse, let’s explore the context in which it is situated. In Mark 12:18-27, the Sadducees present a hypothetical scenario to Jesus involving a woman who had been married to seven brothers, each of whom died in succession. They pose a question based on the Mosaic law of levirate marriage (Deuteronomy 25:5-6), which stated that if a man died childless, his brother was to marry the widow and raise up offspring for his deceased brother.

The Sadducees, who did not believe in the resurrection, present a puzzling situation to Jesus: “Therefore in the resurrection, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them? For the seven had her to wife” (Mark 12:23, KJV).

By bringing up this scenario, the Sadducees sought to challenge the concept of resurrection, aiming to expose what they considered to be a flaw or contradiction in Jesus’ teachings. They presumed that the idea of resurrection would create difficulties and conflicts in the afterlife.

However, Jesus responds to their question by clarifying their misunderstanding and revealing deeper spiritual truths. In Mark 12:24-25 (KJV), Jesus says: “And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God? For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven.”

Jesus corrects the Sadducees’ misconception by explaining that marriage, as a human institution, will not continue in the resurrection. He teaches that in the resurrection, people will be like the angels in heaven, where there is no need for procreation or marriage. Jesus emphasizes that the nature of life after resurrection is fundamentally different from life on earth.

This passage not only addresses the specific question raised by the Sadducees but also provides valuable insights into the nature of the resurrection and the kingdom of God. Jesus asserts that eternal life involves a transformed state in which marriage and other earthly concerns no longer exist. He encourages the Sadducees, and all who hear His words, to gain a deeper understanding of Scripture and the power of God.

In summary, Mark 12:23 demonstrates the Sadducees’ attempt to challenge Jesus’ teachings on the resurrection. However, Jesus uses this opportunity to teach about the nature of the resurrection and the transformed state of existence in the kingdom of God.
