Mark 12:24

Posted on 18 May at 14:43
Listen to this article

“And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God?”

Context:To better understand the verse, it is important to consider the context. Prior to this encounter, Jesus had been teaching in the temple, and various groups, including the Pharisees and the Sadducees, had been questioning His authority. In this specific exchange, the Sadducees try to present a scenario that challenges the idea of resurrection.

Here are some key points to consider in this Bible study:

Error due to lack of knowledge:Jesus begins His response by highlighting the error of the Sadducees. He states, “Do ye not therefore err…” This indicates that they were mistaken or misled. Jesus attributes their error to two main factors: their lack of knowledge of the Scriptures and their ignorance of the power of God.

Knowledge of the Scriptures:The Sadducees, despite being religious leaders, did not have a proper understanding of the Scriptures. They failed to grasp the full depth and significance of the teachings found in the Old Testament. Their limited understanding hindered their ability to comprehend the truth about resurrection.

Ignorance of the power of God:Alongside their lack of Scriptural knowledge, the Sadducees also lacked an understanding of the power of God. They underestimated or dismissed the supernatural capabilities of God, including His ability to bring about resurrection. Their skepticism prevented them from acknowledging the miraculous works of God.

Application:This verse serves as a reminder to us that a proper understanding of the Scriptures is crucial for our faith. It highlights the importance of studying and knowing the Word of God. Additionally, it emphasizes the significance of recognizing and believing in the power of God, which extends beyond our human comprehension.

  • In summary:Mark 12:24 reveals Jesus’ response to the Sadducees’ erroneous question about resurrection. It underscores the need for a proper understanding of the Scriptures and the power of God. This verse encourages believers to deepen their knowledge of God’s Word and to trust in His limitless power.
