Mark 12:34
And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.
Mark 12:34 (KJV)
Context
This verse closes a series of controversies in Mark 12, where Pharisees, Herodians, and Sadducees each tried to trap Jesus with questions. A scribe then asked which commandment was first of all. Jesus answered by quoting the Shema from Deuteronomy 6:4-5, calling Israel to love the Lord with all the heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:29-30).
The scribe responded with understanding, affirming that loving God and neighbor is more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices (Mark 12:32-33). Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, meaning wisely and with understanding, and told him, “Thou art not far from the kingdom of God.” The word discreetly suggests a thoughtful, intelligent response, not mere agreement.
Meaning
Jesus’ words are precise: the scribe was not far from the kingdom, but he was not yet in it. He had grasped the heart of the law and spoken rightly, yet entrance into the kingdom requires more than correct understanding. The commendation shows that sincere, thoughtful engagement with Jesus’ teaching brings a person near to God’s reign, but full entrance comes through receiving Jesus Himself.
The closing statement, “And no man after that durst ask him any question,” shows that Jesus’ wisdom and authority silenced His opponents. Their questions were attempts to trap Him, but His answers were so complete that no one dared to challenge Him further.
Application
This passage calls us to move from knowing the right answers to loving God and neighbor with our whole lives. It also encourages us to engage Jesus’ teaching thoughtfully, as the scribe did, and to recognize that nearness to the kingdom is not the same as entering it. We are invited to respond to Jesus not with further testing, but with faith and wholehearted obedience.
Reflection
Jesus sees and honors sincere understanding. Yet His words remind us that the goal is not merely to be near the kingdom, but to enter it through Him. May we, like the scribe, answer with wisdom—and then take the final step of trusting and following Christ.
