Mark 13:29
“So ye in like manner, when ye shall see these things come to pass, know that it is nigh, even at the doors.”
1. Context: Mark 13 is commonly known as the “Olivet Discourse,” where Jesus speaks to His disciples about the signs of the end times and His second coming. In this chapter, Jesus provides insight into future events and encourages His followers to be watchful and prepared for His return.
2. Key Points:
- a. Observing the signs: Jesus tells His disciples to pay attention to the signs that indicate the nearness of His coming. He mentions various events and occurrences that will take place before His return, such as the destruction of the temple (Mark 13:1-2), false christs and prophets (Mark 13:5-6), wars and rumors of wars (Mark 13:7-8), and other tribulations (Mark 13:9-23).
- b. Understanding the nearness: In verse 29, Jesus highlights that when His followers witness these prophesied events coming to pass, they should recognize that His return is near. The phrase “it is nigh, even at the doors” signifies the imminence of His coming, suggesting that the events preceding His return will occur in rapid succession and serve as indicators of His imminent arrival.
3. Application:
- a. Alertness and vigilance: As believers, we should be attentive to the signs of the times and the fulfillment of biblical prophecies. While we cannot predict the exact day or hour of Jesus’ return (Matthew 24:36), we are called to be watchful and discerning regarding the events unfolding around us.
- b. Encouragement and hope: Mark 13:29 reminds us that despite the trials and tribulations we may face, the return of Jesus Christ is a sure and imminent hope for believers. The fulfillment of prophetic signs should serve as a source of encouragement, reminding us that God’s promises will be fulfilled in due time.
- c. Preparedness and faithfulness: Jesus’ emphasis on being watchful implies that we should live with a sense of urgency and readiness for His return. This includes remaining faithful to God, actively pursuing a life of righteousness, and fulfilling the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20) by sharing the Gospel with others.
4. Other Scripture cross-references:
- a. Matthew 24:32-33 – Jesus uses the analogy of the fig tree to teach His disciples to discern the signs of the times.
- b. 1 Thessalonians 5:6 – The Apostle Paul encourages believers to be watchful and sober in light of the Day of the Lord.
- c. Revelation 3:11 – Jesus exhorts the church in Philadelphia to hold fast to what they have, for He is coming quickly.
