Mark 13:35

Posted on 18 May at 14:43

“Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning:”

Context:Mark 13 is often referred to as the "Little Apocalypse" because it contains Jesus’ teaching on the end times. In this chapter, Jesus foretells the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem and provides signs that will precede His return. He emphasizes the importance of being spiritually alert and ready for His coming.

Watchfulness:The central theme of Mark 13:35 is watchfulness. Jesus uses the analogy of a master of the house returning unexpectedly to convey the necessity of being prepared at all times. Just as the household servants need to stay vigilant and ready for their master’s return, Jesus’ followers are called to be spiritually awake and attentive.

Uncertain timing:Jesus highlights the uncertainty surrounding the timing of His return. He mentions various times of the day, such as evening, midnight, cockcrowing, and morning, to emphasize that His coming can happen at any moment. The purpose is to encourage believers to maintain a constant state of preparedness and not to be caught off guard.

Spiritual application:The exhortation to watch applies not only to the disciples during Jesus’ earthly ministry but also to believers throughout history. Christians are called to live in a state of readiness, knowing that Christ could return at any time. This mindset involves cultivating a deep relationship with God, living in obedience to His Word, and actively engaging in the work of the Kingdom.

Watchfulness in daily life:The concept of watchfulness extends beyond Christ’s second coming. It also involves being alert to the spiritual realities and challenges present in our daily lives. Believers are called to be watchful of temptation, the snares of the enemy, and the distractions that can hinder their faith and devotion to God.
