Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.

Context

This verse concludes Jesus’ teaching known as the Olivet Discourse, where He spoke to His disciples about the end times and His second coming. In Mark 13, Jesus describes signs that will precede His return, such as false Christs, wars, and natural disasters, and He cautions His disciples to be discerning and not deceived.

In verse 32, Jesus declares that even He, as the Son of God, does not know the exact timing of His return, for that knowledge belongs to the Father alone. He then compares His return to a master who goes on a journey and leaves his servants in charge. In verse 34, He states, “For the Son of Man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.” The porter, or gatekeeper, had the duty of watching for the master’s return, ensuring the household remained secure and ready.

Meaning

In verse 36, Jesus warns that the master may come suddenly and find the porter sleeping. The Greek word translated “sleeping” (katheudō) refers to spiritual drowsiness or unpreparedness, not merely physical sleep. It symbolizes complacency, inattentiveness, or a lack of readiness for Christ’s return.

The verse emphasizes the need for constant vigilance and faithfulness. Believers are to remain spiritually awake, alert, and actively engaged in the tasks God has entrusted to them. The uncertainty of the timing—whether evening, midnight, rooster crow, or dawn—means that readiness must be continuous, not occasional.

Biblical connections

This warning echoes Jesus’ conclusion in verse 37: “And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.” The call to stay awake and sober is reinforced in Matthew 24:42 and 1 Thessalonians 5:6, which urge believers to remain alert for the Lord’s coming.

Application

We should not grow apathetic or lax in our devotion to God. Instead, we are to live each day with a sense of urgency, faithfully serving and honoring God in all aspects of our lives. The timing of Christ’s return is uncertain, and it could occur suddenly, catching the unprepared off guard. Therefore, we must remain watchful, discerning the season we are in, and living in anticipation of His return.

This verse does not teach a specific timeline for Christ’s return, but it affirms the certainty of His coming and the necessity of preparedness. It calls us to examine our own lives: Are we spiritually awake, or have we grown drowsy in our responsibilities? The master will return, and He desires to find us faithfully watching.
