Mark 13:36
“Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.”
Context:This verse is a part of Jesus’ teaching known as the Olivet Discourse, where He spoke to His disciples about the signs of the end times and His second coming.
In this particular verse, Jesus emphasizes the importance of being watchful and prepared for His return.
To fully understand the verse, it is helpful to examine the context. In Mark 13, Jesus discusses the signs that will precede His coming, such as false Christs, wars, and natural disasters. He cautions His disciples to be discerning and not to be deceived by false prophets and signs.
In verse 32, Jesus declares that even He, as the Son of God, does not know the exact timing of His return, as that knowledge is reserved for the Father alone. Jesus then compares His return to that of a master who goes on a journey and leaves his servants in charge. In verse 34, He states, “For the Son of Man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.”
Here, Jesus uses the analogy of a master or householder who entrusts his servants with specific tasks and responsibilities while he is away. The “porter” referred to in verse 34 is the gatekeeper or doorkeeper who has the duty of being vigilant and watching for the master’s return. The porter’s role is to ensure that the household remains secure and ready for the master’s arrival.
In verse 36, Jesus warns, “Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.” Here, the word “sleeping” symbolizes spiritual complacency, inattentiveness, or a lack of preparedness. Jesus urges His disciples (and believers throughout time) to be spiritually awake, alert, and actively engaged in fulfilling their responsibilities as His followers.
The verse emphasizes the need for readiness and faithfulness in our Christian walk. We should not grow apathetic or lax in our devotion to God, but instead remain vigilant, actively pursuing righteousness, and fulfilling the tasks and responsibilities He has entrusted to us. We should be watchful for the signs of the times, discerning the season we are in and living in anticipation of Christ’s return.
Furthermore, this verse serves as a reminder that the timing of Jesus’ return is uncertain. It could occur suddenly and unexpectedly, catching those who are unprepared off guard. Therefore, we must live each day with a sense of urgency, seeking to faithfully serve and honor God in all aspects of our lives.
